What is the idea of putting empty milk gallon containers around the yard to prevent dogs from urinating?

Now, when I was a kid I could about various houses with the empty gallon containers of milk sitting at each corner of the yard. I was told that it was to keep animals from the neighborhood from urinating in the yard. Does anybody recollect what this mean?
I fill the empty containers half with hose.
This keeps off cats from my garden and raised vegetable piece. I believe its because they don't like the shine coming from the water flask.
It seems to work, no cat has made

i would like to start growing more vegetables in my sun live. i already have peppers , tomatoes and strawberries. i have a lot of half gallon ice cream containers . can i lodge some vegetables in them? thanks :)
Radishes, greens such as spinach, and wee herbs are about the only things that will grow well in a pot that small.
