How can I use the scanner function of my HP Officejet 6500 printer without installing ink cartridges?

I am surroundings it up solely for the use of the scanner, but as soon as I turn it on the printer reads that there is an solecism with the ink cartridges and it will not allow me to clear the message. I tried pressing OK, Recall, and Scan and nothing
I identify it sounds silly, but you need to install the ink cartridges to make the printer terminated. Same as in order to print with black ink, you need ink in the color cartridge also.

I want to refill my hp 920 black ink cartridge using refill ink for hp97 blank ink cartridges -is this Ok?

I switched printers about a month ago, and my old printer old hp 97 ink for black. My new printer (hp 6500) uses hp 920 cartridges. I still have a bracket gather of old hp97 ink that I bought off the internet and it worked fine with my old printer
